Interpretation of  "Roughly Written"

"...Eyewitnesses reported that the asteroid, or ufo, had tumbled weirdly out of the sky in a spiral... ...the baffled responders, searching for asteroid remnants, soon realized they were salvaging some sort of aeronautical craft they likes of which they had never seen... ...it appeared to be an assembly of random shaped metal plates, covered with organized markings... ...roughly written messages from beyond our understanding..."
